Cupping is a traditional Chinese therapy with a history dating back over a thousand years. It involves placing specialized cups, typically made of glass or bamboo, on the skin to create gentle suction. This suction encourages circulation and promotes healing by stimulating the flow of Qi and blood. Historically known as the “Horn Method,” cupping is now commonly referred to as baguanfa (traditional fire cupping), or suction cup therapy.
Cupping is commonly used to support recovery from muscle strain, joint pain, colds, flu, digestive concerns, and respiratory conditions such as chronic cough or asthma. It may also be combined with acupuncture to enhance therapeutic effects and support the body’s natural healing response.
During a session, cups are typically left in place for about 15–20 minutes. Temporary redness or circular marks may appear as circulation increases; these marks are normal and usually fade within a few days.
